Architect Emir DRAHŞAN: “You can work on steel material as a sculptor and make it dance…”

50 years later, we can come to a point where we construct a building 100 times lighter than now through nanotechnology and have the building float in the air with the use of magnetic technology to prevent impact of earthquake and soil with self-adjustment to wind.
Now atomic structure of materials can be interfered with through nanotechnology. While calculating a steel section, width, length, section form and structural composition of steel are taken into consideration. With composition, I mean the atomic structure of the material. Steel is never pure steel, it is composed of different atoms. It is now possible to interfere with steel material in atomic scale through nanotechnology. This means that we will come across purer materials.

Thus, with the same steel material, for instance with an IPN 30 will we be able to cover a span of not 8 meters but maybe 80 meters, because you are getting rid of the impure part of the steel.

Another issue is the composite materials. For instance, planes are more robust and lighter with the use of new plane alloys, allowing you to fly more comfortable with less fuel consumption, build bigger planes with increased passenger capacity.

There are significant differences in steel alloy in planes between today and fifty years ago, this also applies to automotive industry. Once again we must remember Jean Prouvé. Soon we will start constructing buildings with fiber steel alloys or an utterly different new materials. This means that we will construct much lighter and safer structures with larger spans. There will be no necessity to use reinforced concrete and steel calculation software in use today and architects should be ready for the new forms which will be available with the introduction of these materials. 3D printer technology is coming to a point that soon we will construct highrise structures using them. We will have much bigger printers intended for the industry. Approaching the subject from the urban perspective, one of the biggest problems recently is that we design the buildings individually. Urban integrity is being destroyed. You build on soil and the most valuable soil is damaged with no return to original condition. Reason of the floods we see is the lack of soil to absorb the water in cities. Soon there will be structures which buildings will have no connection to soil and float in the air. There are trains and other new vehicles moving with utilization of magnetic fields.

50 years later, we can come to a point where we construct a building 100 times lighter than now through nanotechnology and have the building float in the air with the use of magnetic technology to prevent impact of earthquake and soil with self-adjustment to wind. For instance, you are moving your house from one location to another…
